Armchair Experimentation
We read once about Einstein sitting in a cafe in some European city, something like Vienna or more probably Bern, back in his early days, and he looked down at the swirling clouds of cream in his coffee. And according to the legend, for such it is in our memory since we cannot find the citation, he realized that this movement of cream in his still coffee was in part due to the jostling of molecules, which then became the basis for his ground-breaking work on Brownian Motion.
We sit here looking at our books and often drift away into what we like to call, being the intellectual descendants of Einstein, at least in knowing the terminology, of what is called a gedankenexperiment. That is one of those aggregated German words, that we learned when we thought we would be standing around in a white lab coat and looking at colored liquids in test tubes. While we think we are the heirs to genius, in reality, we are just probably being egotistical, but it comes and goes, some days we flash with brilliance, and other days we spend trying to remember where we put our merchandise. But that being said, a gedankenexperiment is translated as something like a thought-experiment. It is intangible and does not require any equipment or a laboratory.
When we are not wrapping books for shipping, we are conducting gedankenexperiments. We stare out the windows and gaze at the passing cars, a big oak tree, the clouds in the sky, and we are actually hard at work in our gedankenlab. That would be the imaginary place where we store our gedanken laboratory equipment. Of course, the true enemy of our thought-experiments, is when we flip our computer console over to the cable television display option. Yes, we can check the weather, or stocks, or see what a certain very popular rectangular yellow invertebrate, (hint: he is also used as a kitchen utensil) is up to with his fellow invertebrates, and all our careful experimentation is wrecked. Here is some of the new items for sale. We have set this up for eBay with a nice neat grid, but they are also for sale at the:
http://my-lynx-associates.com website.
We like this little grid shown below, it shows some of our recent book postings available on most of our websites on the right, subject to prior sale, in case you come by later. If you want to follow in Einstein's footsteps, we have an advanced book on Quantum Chemistry shown below on the right side at the bottom. We feel smarter just having it on the shelf.
