4 hott grls
Books are reflective of the goals, aspirations and even the thinking of their owners. And when we happen upon a book, it very often has been used by another person.
Sometimes what we find left inside the books, as bookmarks or placeholders, is more interesting than what is written in the books. Below is a scan of a little map drawn on the back of a restaurant credit card slip. It would appear to be, from the female signature on the slip, an invitation to a rendezvous, with not one, not two, not three, but an astonishing four members of the female persuasion.
In our take of the situation, the number 1109 at one side of an arrow, is a room number, the word "omni" is a hotel name, and the street names are part of a rudimentary street map showing the intersection of where the hotel is located. And finally the use of the word "hott" is part of that studied insouciance of the under-25 crowd, who purposely mis-spell words as a form of street credulity/credibility. The youthful demeanor is further reinforced by the use of the abbreviation "grls" which we translate as "girls".
Perhaps it was part of a business seminar, a film conference, or simply an informal get-together (meet-up?) after drinks for some influential and powerhouse sales tactics. We found the slip inside a technical book on film-making, so perhaps these were either actresses or aspiring film directors. Since it was on the back of a signed restaurant receipt with the credit card details and original signature, perhaps it was an invitation to the waiter, named "Justin". And again, was this Justin's book? Did he forget to remove it when he misplaced or otherwise disposed of the book? After all, this appears to be the merchant copy of the receipt, the one that is kept for a record by the restaurant. She did not leave a tip for her waiter, or did she? It would not show if she had left some cash. Or perhaps, the little map on the back was the tip itself.
Such are the ambiguities of the dance of romance, or the quotidian battle for advancement, as the case may be. We will probably never know the details, only the intriguing outlines of a 10:02 PM incident in a chain restaurant in downtown Austin, Texas. It happened way back in June of 2003 for a party of one on a recruiting drive for her highly desirable companions. Such are the mysteries of life.
