Distinguished Guests
We had trouble with the the picture below. It came out all blurry. We tried scanning it in color at first, and it had such fine engraving that these little rainbows, Moiré patterns started appearing. We are feverishly working to resolve this dilemma, but our presentation today is a little blurry.
This is a picture, actually an engraving of a reception for a distinguished guest, perhaps a visiting diplomat, based on the example shown on the facing page of the format for an invitation. It was back in the day when people actually left their homes for something else besides work or the mall. People would dress up in fine clothes and even top hats to call on visitors. They would hobnob, and stand around and chat, as part of an afternoon's entertainment. This is part of a fairly long and especially long work on etiquette, where in turn-of-the-century America (and for you young-'uns that would be turn of the 20th century America), people would gather together to do something besides text each other or play video games.
