Misheard lyrics - Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress

For the young whippersnappers out there in blogland, you don't know how easy it is to figure out lyrics. All you have to do is type in a few words or a phrase in quotes on your favorite search engine and voila there is some website that has all the lyrics, even the chords to your favorite song. For decades, we sat there and played our vinyl "albums" over and over trying to dissect what was being said.

In the case of the Hollies song, "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress", we had no idea what was being said for decades. The rhythm was infectious, the song was imbedded in our consciousness from the first note to the last.

However except for a couple of phrases, we had no idea what was being sung. We thought it had a line that sounded like something from the Futurama cartoon series with the character Bender and his floozy girlfriend. It went something like "a machine was a-holding my left hand, a machine was a-holding my right!". We thought it was some kind of robot girlfriend perhaps, set in some desolate post-human apocalyptic future world.

The quoted verse in its entirety has nothing to do with robots, rather it is a promise of immunity for a night-club singer caught in a speakeasy raid by an undercover agent. The actual words go:

Well, the DA was pumping my left hand
She was holding my right
Well, I told her, "Don't get scared
'Cause you're gonna be spared
I'm gonna be forgiven if I wanna spend my living... (with a long cool woman in a black dress)
