We Were Distracted with Other Things
We missed some sleep on early Wednesday morning with a big storm front that rushed through, and we were mildly apprehensive when the flash-flood warnings started beaming over the weather radio at 3 AM. Later on Wednesday, they were even talking the possibility of tornadoes. Nothing materialized, but we have the digital converter box on the television tuned to the station that carries the 24 hour radar images. We press a button on the computer monitor, and we can see the radar right on the computer.
But today was dry, and we used the break to shave the green growing objects in the front yard to a uniform short height as per the regulations of American Lawn Culture. The recent rains have pushed the lawn into overdrive, and it is starting to look jungle-like.
Here is a recent addition to our on-line book store at My-Lynx-Associates, It is a 1946 magazine-type publication, perhaps from the many newsstands of the era. It is a rare copy, a little worn around the edges, but the author, Bill Stern was a household name in his day. He is credited with the first live remote on radio of a sport event, as well as covering the first Major League baseball game on television.
He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and made appearances in the movies and on television. There is some indication that his radio format inspired the recently deceased Paul Harvey. These are tales (some of them tall) of boxing, football, horseracing and more. We bought just for the cover - it looks pretty wild. It has a reddish-orange background with a screaming yellow banner and a shouting picture of Bill Stern with a racing form in one hand, holding a pair of binoculars in the other, a radio microphone on one side, with a bruised and battered hat pushed back on his forehead. The whole thing practically jumped out of the box we found it in and leaped into our laps. We have placed this in our "retro" section, where it is probably our most illustrious representative of the genre. The title is "My Favorite Sports Stories" the subtitle is: "150 Strange and Amazing Tales And Humorous Anecdotes From The World Of Sports As Told By A Great Story Teller"
