A Thunderous Night

We were so pleased with ourselves in our last blog. We had dodged the storms here in Central Texas, which had gone slightly north of the My-Lynx Associates headquarters. The early evening listening session of one of the local AM radio staitions was peppered with the crackle of lightning and the radio static it produces which can be heard for 20 or more miles. We thought we were in for a big storm. We turned on the weather forecast and the Doppler radar showed that the storm had passed by about 20 miles north of us, and we were assured by the weather authority that with the waning of the heat of the day the chance for thunderstorms was all but gone. So we chimed in on our blog last night about the measly tiny drizzle that fell on the august environs of our world headquarters.

We were working past midnight on our new book acquisitions, and began a prolonged data transfer of vital information to help run our business. It cannot be interrupted once started and can take quite some time. So we turned off the brightly lit computer monitor to save some energy and turned in for the night in our nearby residence. Our ears perked up however after settling in under the covers and the sound of a distant dragon-like rumble. We scurried to the windows and pulled up the venetian blinds and saw the flashes of an oncoming storm. We nearly moaned with dismay since we could not unplug our computer without losing all the data we had squirreled away over a couple of hours.

Our habit is to disconnect our machinery from the power mains when lightning and thunder happen too close together to prevent the electronic components from being fried by a voltage surge induced by the powerful Texas lightning when it decides to travel along a power line. So we tried to pretend that it would not happen, that it would be an acceptable risk to allow the data transfer to continue. We put on our favorite MP3 player into our ears, and decided to put on a little music.

Big Mistake. We chose Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, something we have never listened to for more than a few minutes, being that it is German Opera at its most Teutonic. And the thing about classical music, as a category and opera in particular, is that it always scares us a little, because the quiet passages are so somnolent, and the loud passages are so bombastic. And bombast is never so bombastic as with Wagner. And with the approaching thunder and the increasing power of the storm, we were having a little trouble distinguishing the sturm und drang in this opera (that would be storm and stress in German) from the "sturm" outside. And at 1:30 or 2 AM, one's still-groggy perception of reality during a storm can become a little attenuated, what with the flashing of light in the sky and the reflection of the blinding light on the walls through another layer of closed eyes, the thrumming of rain on the roof, and the worry about the download in the office.

We finally roused ourselves from our restless respite and unplugged some of our more delicate appliances, and the supplemental computer that we use. We noted that the download process was still in progress, so we decided to review, in the wee hours before dawn, the plot of Tristan und Isolde, and we remembered the story from some other research we had done during another sleepless night. It is about an Irish princess, in ancient times gone by, who is dragged from her happy home (in Ireland), and is set on a ship to be delivered by the loyal Tristan to his lord Marke. Somewhere along the line there is some love potion drunk and then the fun begins. It is speculated that the legend later became the basis for Galahad and Guinevere. We were in the midst of the storm listening to the selection "Erwache mir wieder, kühne Gewalt" where Isolde, in her rage, wishes the sea to rise up and swallow the ship they are sailing on into its depths so as to spare her honor. (Be stirred in me once again, bold power; rise up from my breast where you have lain concealed!)

Not exactly a cheerful story, abduction, unwilling subjugation, duty, honor and deceit. So the rest of the night was not very restful. But we remembered, not letting an opportunity pass us by, that we do have a book about Wagner which we will feature today in memory of our sleepless, stormy, night.

It is an antique copy of an English-language autobiography of Wagner. We might say "brand-new", but that might be a little much to believe, but it is a rare unread copy. The pages are still in their original state, having never been cut. In days gone by, books would be sold with the pages still joined, as they came from the printer, and for whatever reason this book has never felt the cut of the scissor.

Monday Night And We Are Selling Books, Looking Out the Window

We spent most of the day on administrative details of running our vast world headquarters, located in the hills north of the state capital here in Texas. There was a gentle drizzle today, just a little mist to set the windshield wipers on the intermittent setting. Spring is visible in the form of flower buds on the local trees, they don't have leaves just yet, it was snowing only about 10 days ago, but the warmth is closing in, and the first signs of a Southern Spring are in the air.

Hail to you in the Northern Climes, places like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota and so on, we are reporting that things are already well on their way in the South-Land. The Spring Equinox is just a short time away. We are just starting to see some bugs in the air, as they emerge from their dormancy. And lo and behold! We were awakened on Saturday and Sunday by the soft cooing of doves at daybreak. That is the surest sign. We don't know where they go the rest of the year, they roost in the trees most of the time, and they are hard to see, but they can be heard joining in calls of united contentment from street to street, hilltop to hilltop. One will drop off in cooing, and another will pick up the note. They will be busy until at least mid-July, growing more common and dare we say: Noisy? They are really coos, not really intense, but they are noticeable in the early quiet moments of dawn.

The forecast was for thunderstorms today, and we could see them on the weather radar which is provided for people who need to know such things, which in these parts is nearly everyone. The storms passed by to the North, close enough so that the AM radio was crackling with the static that thunderstorms bring. But we just got the slow drizzle all day, no dramatic thunderheads, which would otherwise cause us to run to the electrical outlets to unplug our network of electronics and computers.

We spent some time reading up on the Lemba people of South Africa, and then we watched a tape of some research on their prize ancestral drum, the ngoma lungundu. They mention that during battle the drum could paralyze opponents in the battlefield with the sound of it being beaten.

They mention that their migration from parts north, included time in the Yemen, and that they were part of the Jewish Diaspora. And we need to build a big drum of our own. But that is a project for when we get a larger workshop, most of the current workshop is filled with books right now.

We found a copy of "The Crying of Lot 49" a few days ago by author Thomas Pynchon which we are getting ready for sale. We are reviewing the laws of thermodynamics, communications theory and the history of postal systems in medieval Europe in preparation. Unfortunately the prose style of Pynchon always makes our own writing style a little unpredictable, since we get caught up in all the 60s-style paranoia that he helped induce into many contemporary writings and even web page terminology. Just type in the semi-mythical corporation "Yoyodyne" mentioned in the book into your favorite search engine to see how it has interpenetrated the fabric of popular culture.

We are trying to remember if there were any clandestine communication systems in the book. Here is a rendition of one of the graffiti from the book that symbolized the delicate nature of communication: the symbol of the "muted horn". We can never fail to be baffled by the random phrases and clauses from the book as in:

"Did Baby Igor get to Constantinople in the good submarine 'Justine'?"

and why was Baby Igor disguised as a Turkish beggar boy? The answers to these questions can only be solved by returning to this blog when we actually post a copy of the book for sale.

Inexpensive and Hard-To-Find Book

This is a book that was printed in the U. S. Virgin Islands and has not gotten a wide circulation.

We just listed a copy in the last few minutes.

You could not find it (until now) on Amazon or eBay, at least this printing version (5th printing, September 1990), but it is available at the My-Lynx-Associates.com book store. We don't like to brag too much about our selection, but this short book is interesting for herbalists, people who want to know more about other cultures, and even botanists who might want to know more about the popular uses of both medicinal herbs and plant-lore in a little-known part of America. The author, Arona Petersen has assembled together some of the oral traditions and spent time researching and identifying a number of plants (with the scientific names for reference purposes.)

The title of the book is "Herbs and Proverbs of the Virgin Islands", the author is Arona Peterson. The book mixes Caribbean island plant lore with some local proverbs. We have the one copy, when it has been sold, we will have to revise this blog entry, and blog visitors may have that annoyed feeling that they missed out on something special. Another Moon Photo - We Have More Books Now

We picked up some new books. We wrote part of this in the afternoon, and came back and posted some new books in a grid below, under the picture, You can buy them on our My-Lynx Associates web site, on eBay and on Amazon or the other sites on the right, depending on what they accept from us. Not all of the books are automatically accepted for sale. Some websites restrict our entries based on their own acceptance criteria, except for My-Lynx Associates which we write the rules for acceptance ourselves.

For your aesthetic pleasure, before we get to the business portion of our blog entry of the day: here is another picture (we had an entry earlier in the week) of the recent full moon during last week, which we found especially attractive, because of the high clouds that gave the photos a certain hazy glow. This photo gives the moon a defined circular edge, the focus being the moon, rather than the softer tones of our previous photo. It is almost monochromatic, very little visible color, just various shades of gray, a few stick-like stray tree branches in black and the hazy white moon. The picture was shot with a color setting, but the dim ambient lighting has probably diminished perceptible color to a minimum.

We recently read about something, an anecdote really, about an older woman in one man's family, from somewhere in the "old country" in Europe, who said that one should never sleep in direct moonlight, since it could cause one to go into a kind of altered state, maybe even causing children to sleepwalk.

More than once we have gone to sleep by the light of the full moon, and it can cause one to be restless, perhaps even disturbing ordinary sleep, but that is, from our point of view, more due to the intense light of a full moon, than by the content of the light or any mysterious tidal influence that people like to chat about.

There are some that claim that our contemporary practice of staring at the television at night is an updated, technological way of staring at the moon, since the focus on the screen, and the dim artificial light are somewhat like the days of yore when people would ascend on hillsides to contemplate the rising and movement of the moon in the pre-industrial age. People could socialize in the evening because the light would provide a beacon to guide the steps of people in the later hours of the night, when it was time to return home from an evening's socializing.

In Birmingham, England there was a long standing informal gathering of notables called "The Lunar Society", where members would gather at various venues for learned individuals to gather in the years 1765 until 1813. They would use the full moon night as a cause to gather together and then depart in the later hours when the bright moon would guide them through the pre-industrial darkness. While we in these latter days have artificial light to guide us, we probably do not have the caliber of guests that would meet to discuss topics of natural science and philosophy. Besides the illustrious polymath, Benjamin Franklin, here is a partial list of notables:

We would like to think, in a true Romantic fashion, that it was the subtle light of the full moon that stimulated their lively discussions over such a long interval, and perhaps even made them even more illustrious.

Next full moon for record-keeping purposes is around the 29th of March, but since the light does not vary much, the actual time is on the 30th in the early morning hours, so probably the 31st as well, for a total of 3 days of bright moonlight, suitable for a walk in a dimly lit forest path. If we can find a forest in Central Texas. Maybe we will stroll by the local copse of live oaks along a meandering stream that passes through the limestone outcrops. The weather should be mild by the end of the month for a perfect moonlit walk.

March Inventory - What's For Sale - Spring is Just About Here

These are mostly books for sale, with a few CDs. They are for sale at My-Lynx Associates at http://www.my-lynx-associates.com (if you came here while searching for a title, it is updated semi-monthly. It is a list of over 1,200 items, so you may not want to read the whole thing). It is alphabetized to a certain extent. We say that because the titles are taken from a preset catalog of items and capital letters in titles may have the item placed differently than items that do not have capital letters. The books are probably also for sale at the links provided on the right, depending on the individual sites requirements for listing items. Most of you will be familiar with Amazon, where we sell via their facility and we list on both Amazon and eBay, where we provide capable service to people who have accounts there.

Our inventory on eBay fluctuates from time to time, and their policy changes about what is listable and how it is listed. They are changing from "store inventory" to a fixed-priced only format in the next month or so, so it may affect how items are listed. We have now been qualified as a "Power Seller" on eBay by their staff because of our attention to detail, and our speed of service for our customers. Spring is around the corner here in Central Texas, the world headquarters of My-Lynx Associates, the buds in the trees are ready to burst, the blue-bonnet flowers are predicted by botanical experts to be spectacular because of the plentiful rain we have had during the the winter season. Last night's Full Moon

We admit that we are moon-gazers. We just stare upwards until we get giddy with the gentle light of a February Full Moon day. We can't show you tonight's moon, the clouds are too thick for the subtle light of our nearest celestial companion to illuminate our nocturnal sky.

But we knelt down on our hands and knees in an open area to pay obeisance to the lunar orb by capturing its likeness on a charged array of semiconductors, also known as a digital camera. The glow in this photo is a little overwhelming for the camera, it seems to have saturated the picture like the sun. The thin layer of high clouds that preceded tonight's cloudy weather give the whole scene a kind of diffuse glow that we find most pleasing in retrospect. The tiny, but winter-hardy leaves of a Texas live oak give a little size and perspective to the scene, almost like an ancient Chinese scroll painting.

Snow Is Gone (Already)!

The rare snow here in Central Texas vanished by this morning. It was just a light snowfall, less than an inch on the insulated places like the roof of the My-Lynx Associates World Headquarters, the lawn, the trees, and anywhere that residual heat was insulated from the previous day allowed the snow to "stick". The temperature was a little over freezing, so the conditions were not ideal for snow, but the weather models indicated that it would be just a few flakes, and it actually turned out to be something of a snowfall. We were able to deliver our packages to the Post Office, so business did not come to a complete halt. The schools shut down early, though for what reason we could not see.

The pavement remained damp right through the afternoon and without any freeze-up or icy spots, so it may have been because the adults in the school districts were looking for a snow-day themselves. We saw a few miniature snow-men, with little stick for arms, that was something new.

We did see some older students on a television news story, of college age in a town nearby, and they were catching snow-flakes on their tongues, something that we have yet to try, or if we have tried, have blotted out the memories of what seems to be a pointless exercise.

We have held out our tongue for Italian ices, sorbet, and flavored ices from time to time, but we are baffled as to the point of eating a snowflake. We think that we saw this on an old "Peanuts" TV special, but that was probably sandwiched in between the comments by Charlie Brown, Linus and the other characters with their ongoing issues and anxieties about life in a modern post-industrial society.

We did not understand that kind of subtlety when we were children. The issues that Charles M. Schulz illustrated in his works seem to be more relevant to the staff of the bookstore in the light of existential alienation and the chronic state of emergent panic that characterizes the way that visual media like television and even movies and how they anxiously portray the everyday occurrence of daily trials and tribulations of contemporary urban life.

This is what makes Schulz's "Peanuts" more appealing now, than when he was alive. We have carried some of Schulz's works in the past, maybe we should put some more up for sale now that we are talking about it. The long winter makes us think about books and cartoons. Here is another view of yesterday's gentle snowfall on the edges of the cedar trees, which has already vanished into the ephemeral magic of memory and history. We are thinking about a Japanese-styled haiku to commemorate the spirit of the day. Maybe we will read some and get back to you with one of our own.

Snow Day!

We are far enough south to be called "Peach Blossom territory", where the peaches grow in the Spring, so snow is a semi-annual (every few years) event.

We had a light dusting earlier this year, some frost in the bird bath, but today they are showing little maps on the television with corresponding crawls of text on the bottom of the screen about county-by-count warnings and watches, and announcing school closures, so it is official. It is right around freezing, so the snow is only adhering to insulated surfaces, the roads are still clear.

And we are just on the boundary between a substantial accumulation and damp sleet. We will stay in and audit our books, we have already done our shipping for the day, so customers can relax in the knowledge that their merchandise is already on its way. We were inspired to take a photo of this rare event. We call it "Snow falling on Cedars".

Daytime Naps Boost Learning

It is not something that we usually do in the middle of the day, but a BBC article dated February 21st, we just finished reading suggests that increased learning potential could result from a simple daytime nap. We are already thinking of how we could reschedule our activities by starting a little earlier and then working a little later to schedule a 90 minute session in the midday. In a memory test of 39 healthy adults, the experimenters found that two groups, one with a nap and one without, the one with the naps had better retention of facts after a nap.

We could do a similar experiment here, if there is no shipping to be done. We consider this to be breakthrough science.

Ash Wednesday - The Party is Over

We forgot about this coffee-table sized book we have for sale about the world-wide celebration of Mardi Gras when we were writing yesterday, which is also known as Carnival, a colorful and fun-filled festival in both South America and Europe, so even though the bright colors of the cover are probably not in keeping with the more subdued tones of the Ash Wednesday and the Lenten Season, one can look forward to next year's upcoming celebration by knowing more about the history, myth and traditions of this ancient practice. Mardi Gras - Weather Man is wearing beads

The sky is clear, the weatherman on the local channel has a couple of shiny strands of party beads around his neck and we forgot about Mardi Gras. The local police force is celebrating with a phlebotimist who will draw blood from any suspected DUI driver, we remember that, so we will be restricting our celebrations.

We are about 500 miles from New Orleans here at the My-Lynx-Associates.com World Headquarters, but we can hear the jazz playing in the distance if the night is quiet enough. We have a "fairy-tale" book about the New Orleans Saints in our library for sale - it is an autographed copy of "All Saints Day: A New Orleans Football Fairy Tale" by Sean Patrick Doles which has the ridiculous premise that the New Orleans Saints could possibly win at football.

The copyright date is 2005, so it is now a fairy tale come true, with an autograph by the author and a dedication. In the last week it has become a collectible, so here is a picture below with a link for your convenience:

No Shipping on President's Day - Federal Holiday - Watching Astronauts Instead

We admit we got distracted yesterday. We don't like to watch too much television, because as entrepreneurs, we need to stay focused on merchandise and our customers, not on people yammering away about stuff they are trying to sell.

That is what we do. We yammer at you with the idea that either we are improving our writing skills, or you folks out their in blog land are snapping up our books and CDs because you are hypnotized by our compelling prose at My-Lynx Associates. you can visit our website at:

But we found a new channel on our cable listing. It was not there before. It was by the clump of channels that provides daily dramas about women and their lives, also known as the soaps. It was the government sponsored NASA channel, and we were watching the EVA, or Extra - Vehicular - Activity - also known as spacewalk of the astronauts at the Space Station. They had the entire procedure covered with cameras. It was not as exciting as regular television, because there were fewer camera effects, but it was exciting nevertheless. We kept flipping over to another channel to watch the Philip K. Dick-inspired thriller Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger. And we felt the contradiction. Should we be watching an imaginary space thriller starring the now-Governor of California running around on a Mars Colony set in the future? Or should we be checking in on real-time video from real astronauts doing real work?

We decided to tape the Total Recall and watch it later. But it was fairly slow viewing on the NASA channel, they had to go through lots of checklists before they opened the hatches to space. They stopped depressurizing at 5.5 pounds of pressure to check forleaks in the airlines and the suits. And that was a little concerning, because when we sit around theoffice here at My-Lynx Associates, we don't necessarily need to worryabout enough breathable atmosphere. This sounds like pretty dangerous work, in other words.

Perhaps the highlight of our viewing (actually we were doing some other tasks, and we listened in on the computer after turning the television off, we found the same feed on the Internet using the NASA.gov website). The highlight was when they started talking about a leak in one of the lines. The two astronauts had already depressurized their airlocks and gone outside. They were installing some coolant lines (a media wag called them "plumbers", and I started calculating their billable rate for service rendered) and while we were doing something else they apparently filled the lines with liquid ammonia to test the circulation of the coolants. The discussion with the staff on the ground centered around if some small "snow flakes" that one of them had seen momentarily was actually an ammonia leak. They seemed to be very concerned about that. Maybe if they had gone back in with some ammonia adhering to their suits, it might be pretty toxic when the temperature came up, so they had to end their spacewalk early to go through some additional procedures to insure that the ammonia would not .

So, we were so involved with the activities that we did not post our blog yesterday. But there is no shipping tomorrow, so we could relax a little. Tomorrow is President's Day, the Post Office is closed, so we are busy preparing merchandise, but it will just have to sit in the corner until Tuesday, when we will once again leap into action.

A Day Of Rest, We Can Blog Away.

Orders slowed down a little this morning, so we have some time to write a fully qualified entry today.

Sometimes work gets busy in the later part of the day, when people get home and click on their mouses. Or more accurately, mice. If the word mouse is used to refer to an electronic device instead of an animal, do the rules of plurality in modifying the word endings also change?

We assume that since the word is a homonym, that pluralizing the word would probably follow the same rule. Unfortunately, when we ran a search for the plural, most of the references we found refer to using the mouse to indicate some picture or activity on the screen, they were not actually definitions.

It is a hard to find copy of Jill Jones & The Lone Star Chorale singing some charming cowboy songs in the style of the old Singing Cowboys of old like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. We listened to it once to check for My-Lynx Associates quality control purposes, and it was so good, we played it again. The Lone Star Chorale may not be a household word but that is not for lack of talent or enthusiasm. We may play some of these sunny tunes again this afternoon to banish our mid-winter fog.

East Coast Orders Are Up!

Our statistics departments has noted the increasing number of orders from the snow-struck areas. They are shopping online, unable to get outside. They are ordering books from us, despite the inclement weather.

We had a little build-up of sleet on the windshield after we delivered our packages to the local Post Office. It is remarkable because we seldom see the frozen forms of water outside a mint julep glass, or some refreshing iced tea during the hot season. We turned on the rear defrost grid on the window, and it still works, after a long interval of non-use.

The water in the bird bath is still liquid, the temperatures are still not low enough to freeze anything. And our shipping department is humming along preparing books for their journey to colder climes.

Another day of quiet, gentle rain. Which is the way we like it. Not to fast, so to cause any mishaps, and enough to soak into the ground and slowly raise the water levels in the reservoirs and lakes nearby.

A Little Sleet Is All

We looked skyward, as people in Texas do, searching across the horizon for change. We saw something - little pellets falling on the windshield. They bounced upwards a few inches and rolled downward.

The sky was a little gray again. But we don't complain, Lake Travis, for record purposes, is at 672 feet above sea level, as they measure it. We like it when the lakes fill up, it means water for drinking, which may not be a big deal to some folks, but west of the Mississippi, water is a precious resource. You don't want so much that you have to run for your life, just a gentle mist that makes the deer come out of their hollows and graze on the fresh greenery. Not that there is too much in mid-February, but we are getting close to the warmth of Spring, and we could have a break in the coolness any day now.

New Symbol

We found this symbol on our keyboard, we changed it to the international characters and here was the Icelandic letter thorn - a single letter that represents a Th phoneme / dipthong / sound. It actually has its' own entry on the Wikipedia online encyclopedia.

Of course, it does not take much to get us excited. We found out that the crafty Internet denizens use it along with a colon to represent a tongue sticking out for an emoticon. We are not big fans of the emoticon, we have used one once this year already, and we felt self-conscious. We tried to make the thorn letter large for dramatic purposes. It is part of the Unicode character set, it is derived from an earlier rune, so it is like many common things, something ancient, even mysterious blended with something very modern.

The Letter Y

We had a low-key Sunday - we looked up at the sky and noticed that is was damp, but no rain appeared before sunset. It looked like it was trying to rain. We stayed inside in seclusion and moved things around in the office, trying to look busy in case the boss came in. We did some blog research, got our stock ready for shipping.

We looked out at 4:30 and there was a uniform gray color from horizon to horizon. We had to get a few branches from a tree into the photograph, because otherwise, the picture would be just a gray square. We did some research on the Icelandic alphabet, and we found out that the old letters from the old English and Colonial signs where it shows the "Ye" as in "Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe" is not originally pronounced "Yee". Instead the letter Y was in used as a "Th" sound.

We may have had a hole in our education, or it is not generally known, or if we ever heard it, we did not retain it.

When In Doubt - Quote in Latin

Latin is our recreational language. When we feel dull or grey, in the darkest depths of Winter's grasp, we take delight in the fact that for all its shortcomings, Latin is undergoing a veritable renaissance. One can find texts online, unbelievably enough, that have never been translated into English.

We believe that European culture went into decline when Greek and Latin were dropped from the universal curriculum and the general population was summarily cut off from the source of great inspiration and thought that had accumulated over the centuries. So, we go to our book of quotes and drop in this tidbit from Horace:

Luctantem Icariis fluctibus Africum
mercator metuens otium et oppidi
laudat rura sui; mox reficit rates
quassas, indocilis pauperiem pati.

Of course, being somewhat ignorant ourselves, we must read this from a book of quotes with translation:

The merchant, dreading the Southwest wind wrestling with the Icarian waves,
praises retirement and the rural life of his native town,
but soon he repairs to his shattered bark,
incapable of being taught to endure poverty.

We had to look up Icarian, it is a region, and an ancient sea. So it reads when pounded by the tumultus waves of a mighty African / Icarian sea, the heedless seller will talk of an idyllic life in his land of birth, which is probably a poverty-stricken, land-locked, two-bit burg, but after the danger of the storm passes, he repairs his ship and travels onward, not being fit enough to endure the lashes of living without the luxury of the trading life. Sort of like us here at the My-Lynx Associates world trading headquarters, except without the raging seas, or the ship, or the native town.
